This table includes additional information to the above visualized indicators, i.e. a short definition of this indicator and a description of the politically determined target values as well as explaining the political intention behind selecting this indicator.
Definition |
The indicator represents the mean value of the indices of national emissions of the five air pollutants sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxide (NOₓ), ammonia (NH₃), volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) and particulate matter (PM₂.₅) compared to the base year 2005. |
---|---|
Intention |
Air pollution not only affects people”s health, but also ecosystems and biodiversity. The unweighted average of emissions of certain air pollutants should therefore fall by 45 per cent by 2030 compared to 2005. This target is based on Germany”s commitment to the European Union (EU) to reduce emissions of individual air pollutants by 2030 as follows: Sulphur dioxide (SO₂) by 58 per cent, nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) by 65 per cent, ammonia (NH₃) by 29 per cent, volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) by 28 per cent and particulate matter (PM₂.₅) by 43 per cent. |
Target |
Reduction of emissions to 55 per cent of 2005 level (unweighted average of the five pollutants) by 2030 |
Type of target |
Goal with a specific target value |
Implementation in weather symbol calculation |
Emissions of air pollutants are to be reduced to a maximum of 55 per cent of the 2005 level by 2030. |
