Definition (Text from the Indicator Report 2022 - State 31.10.2022)

The indicator shows the number of locations in Germany registered with EMAS, the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme, for German as well as foreign organisations.

Definition

The indicator represents the number of sites in Germany registered for the EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) environmental management system by both German and foreign organisations.

Intention

Climate change, the energy transition and the scarcity of resources are presenting companies with new challenges, with the result that they must organise their business processes, structures and products in a way that protects the environment and conserves resources. The EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) environmental management system offers a concept for systematic operational environmental protection and is linked to the aim of continuously improving the environmental performance of the organisation’s location.

Target

5,000 locations of organisations by 2030

Type of target

Goal with a specific target value

Implementation in weather symbol calculation

The number of registered EMAS sites is to be increased to at least 5,000 by 2030.

Due to the significant increase in 2024, the average increase over the last six years is so high that if the trend is maintained, the politically defined target will be achieved well before 2030. Indicator 12.2.a is rated “Sun” for the year 2024.
